A recent survey of 18-year-olds found that most consider violent, pornographic videos to be “harmful” and addictive” and lead to “unrealistic attitudes towards sex”… But does this mean we should “get rid of these videos altogether”?
Shaping our lives
Gross pornographic videos are easily accessible to everyone, and many young people say that viewing sexually explicit images or videos has become part of their daily lives. More than half of respondents think that growing up “would be easier… if obscene, pornographic videos were less accessible to young people”. The reason? They believe that regular access to and viewing of hot pornographic videos can give people unrealistic expectations about sex and what it represents. It has been argued that many pornographic videos can lead viewers to see women as mere objects who are there “for sexual pleasure” while putting a lot of pressure on men to “look and act like hot porn stars.”
Get rid of all hot porn videos?
Does that mean we should get rid of all hot porn videos? Some suggest yes, while others express the need to change the way hot porn videos are accessed. There has also been a focus on sex education in schools: “Children need to learn about sex in the context of healthy and caring relationships and how to protect and respect others,” says Claire Lilley, cyber security officer at the office. Better education. Will it teach people that what they see in hot porn videos is not real life, or should we get rid of hot porn videos altogether? My sex education classes at school were non-existent, but I would love to hear what community members think about this.
